Compress PNG Images Online

Add PNG files to shrink them with lossy color quantization. Compare the size before and after, then download each file or a zip. Nothing is uploaded.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent or stored.

How to use

  1. Drop PNG files into the box or click to choose them. You can add several at once.
  2. Keep “Convert opaque PNGs to JPG” on to turn PNGs without an alpha channel into JPG, or turn it off to keep them as PNG.
  3. Click “Compress”. Each file shows its size before and after and the change in percent.
  4. Download files one by one, or all of them as a zip.

PNG files from screenshots, design tools and app assets are often larger than they need to be. This PNG compressor shrinks them before you put them on a website, ship them in an app or attach them to an email. Several files can be compressed in one go, each row shows the size before and after with the change in percent, and the total is shown at the end.

How it works: the tool reads each file’s PNG color type. A PNG with an alpha channel (grayscale with alpha, RGBA, or a tRNS chunk) is quantized to an 8-bit palette of up to 256 colors, the same approach pngquant takes, so transparency survives. If the compressed result is not smaller than the original, the original file is kept as it is. A PNG without an alpha channel is saved as JPG at quality 92 while the opaque-to-JPG option is on; turn it off to compress it as a palette PNG instead.

Limits: reducing colors is lossy, and no dithering is applied, so smooth gradients may show visible bands. A PNG that has an alpha channel stays PNG even when every pixel is opaque. Pixel dimensions never change, and only the first frame of an animated PNG is processed. Compression happens on your device inside the browser, and no file leaves it.

Frequently asked questions

How is a PNG made smaller?

PNGs with an alpha channel are reduced to an 8-bit palette of up to 256 colors, which keeps transparency. If the result is not smaller than the original, the original file is kept unchanged.

What happens to PNGs without transparency?

With the option on, a PNG that has no alpha channel is saved as JPG at quality 92, because it does not need transparency. Turn the option off to compress it as a palette PNG instead.

Is the compression lossless?

No. Reducing colors is lossy, and no dithering is applied, so smooth gradients can show visible bands. The image size in pixels does not change.
